Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't some natural disaster happen that was supposed to have collapsed the tunnel about 10 years ago? My personal theory is that the whole village is already dead, and has been stuck in some sort of temporal limbo, either because of the dolls' powers or as divine retribution for what they did in worship of the dolls

While that is true, she did managed to meet the teacher and invited his school to visit her village, which was ten years in the past. And that was prior to mc's mother's death.
