It was probably about time for Chitoge to be her own worst enemy for a bit. This whole sequence was pretty painful in the anime, seeing how depressed she was after that incident at the beach. Things ultimately work out for the best in the end of this arc, but it’s really tragic on the way there.
This whole situation puts everyone on edge, and the gangs were probably at their closest point of exploding into all-out war since near the beginning of the story. If Chitoge didn’t play Juliet in the end, it would have been cataclysmically bad.
