I have a feeling in scenes like that, usually the guy would be wondering how soft the girl's hands are, whereas the girl more typically is wondering how rugged the guy's hands are. But of course one could view that as sexism, if not just stereotypical writing.

Where did the "lewd handholding" thing came up? I've been aware that handholding is a sinful act that only incites carnal desires, but i want to know the origin.

Way I see it, handholding as a joke was already a thing but it really got boosted from a joke on Tumblr where an image of an anime girl says she'd like to do something completely benign followed by a user saying "you would like to hold his hand too don't you? You dirty slut."
That comment thread got spread around a ton, just like the "is this a butterfly?" Meme. That's my hill I'm willing to die on
