I agree that he's probably some shade of aroace, but I think the author is hinting at him developing feelings for her over time. I think it would be cool if the author isn't doing that and actually intends to see the story through to the end with a true aroace protagonist, but I doubt it since this is being called a romance. Even still gray ace and demisexual don't get a lot of representation in media either so that'd be fine too in my opinion
