Matsuda sounds like a dumb guy who's armed with a little bit of foreknowledge in a era where being sharp in mind is a requirement to stay alive. All those people he's trying to fool either knows it and leads him on or will kill him quickly for betrayal.

Again, grateful to the translator but there's an inconsistency in the choice of spelling out the "long o" sound (typically written as "ou").
If "Youko" is not spelled as "Yoko", then the "Mori" of Aki should've been "Mouri".
