Ken using the soldier helmet as a cooking pot is a callback to chapter 6 when he first discovered this survival skill which was such a life time ago

Ken already has a leg up compared to most people of this era because he knows the water should be boiled first
It was well known enough that if the water was sus or the drinker weak then you should boil the water if you could.
But admittedly many people didn't know that, I'm just less sure if I want to call it "most" people.

But mainly I wanted to come in and say "no monkey, don't stop teaching me things, I just know the 'why', not the 'how'"

That wasnt my point. A person of this era in his situation would just drink the water and leave it up to fate because it seems clean and comes from a well.

Ken knows modern germ theory and what kind of nasty diseases can be even in clear water, and because he isn't using a well everyone else is using he has no way to know if it's safe. So instead of taking that chance he essentially guarantees his safety.
