Regarding the translator note about her husband calling her "mother":
IIRC in Japan married couples refer to each other as "mom" and "dad" once they become parents instead of using other affectionate nicknames or sometimes even their actual names.
Like for instance in the sequel/flashforward Takagi-san manga we never learn (ex-)Takagi or Nishikata's given names because even though they're well past the stage of using surnames with each other the fact that they have Chi means they only call each other "mom" and "dad" and that's also reflected with how they're listed in each others' contacts list on their phones.

Not really; there are tons of stories where they are alive...
Sure, there are a lot where they are dead... but... people only have 2 biological parents... so there are only 3 options.
0 dead parents
1 dead parent
2 dead parents
So you will logically have a lot for all 3 categories...
And there are millions of stories... so you will find many of each....
