You know, I thought Nomura's family was a bit cartoonish as well. Then I remember the story of the Turpin family, who used to shackle their own children to their beds with padlocks, barely feed them, and leave them unbathed and dressed in filthy clothing for days on end. Sounds like it would be over the top cartoonishly evil, and yet it actually happened.
