Not Really. if someone who i had a strained relationship 1. made it very clear he would never be romantically interested in me 2. came out about being sexually assaulted as a child and how traumatic that experience was and 3. told me that he's terrified of contact with women in general and finally 4. showed many times he's absolutely god awful at understanding interpersonal etiquette i doubt i would see him as a valid romantic partner and would probably do the same thing with reassuring them i would never do anything bordering their stated triggers in the future. i think she's being considerate of the self he has shown to her in the past, not realizing how drastically his feelings have changed. in this case i don't necessarily think it's just anime density akin to a neutron star
