I don't think we're back to square 1. This isn't Rent a Girlfriend after all, it's not like that MC where the guy is so retarded, unable to grow and totally oblivious to how much he has done to get Chizuru.... For this story, it's been hinted quite well how far they've progressed even though Kimio doesn't admit it.

This MC's flaws here are basically that he's naive and is shy when it comes to relationships.
