Not sure what other people are misunderstanding about how he got so hurt.l here, but not against the mother
1. This started as a surprise attack.
2. The mother wasn't trying to kill him, it was primarily a test.
3. We were already shown how slow him invoking magic is, so that's why he couldn't respond while Ice Cream could. The mother showed this in her fight too, with how he had to move while casting a spell because it would take too long standing still.
4. Rather than fighting, he was focusing on protecting Ice Cream and the books, which is why his back was turned.
5. We already were shown that he can get hurt by the dragon flame. He tried using it against Ice Cream's mom, and afterwords he asked how the dragon flame dude could handle it because of how hot the fire is.
It was a surprise, defensive fight against something we know he can take damage from. While I don't want to comment on the quality of the writing itself, this all seems logically consistent.
