If she plays a role at all I doubt it will be any time soon. Just given what happened in this chapter I feel it was used to give more weight and meaning to the events in this chapter.

As always, this is so good. I'm still not sure how I feel about the author introducing the other girl. Mainly because she was also so nice and fits the MC well, it kinda just feels sad for her. And if she ends up being an antagonist or used for drama, that also feels bad. Nonetheless, she really knows how to write cute characters.

usually I hate when a peak girl is introduced just to suffer.

I think NewOld Girl is better with him as good friends. She is an absolute sweetheart but there's no spark and I think she she serves as both a good contrast and good character motivation. If he was with Elementary Friend, he never would have grown. And him feeling like he was dragging her down and feeling gutted about it explains his motivations and why he's so deep in his shell.
