Haven't read up to the rest, but I imagine the friend Shion noticed how Kiki always put herself last for her and others, and she couldn't stand it. It was the sense that no matter what she did, she could never get Kiki to be authentic with herself. As someone who's crushed on people like that, it can be hard.

It would seem that for Kiki, it just takes the right type of person to get her out of that shell.
