There are fates worse than death. They can be put in situations they'd never get out of. Imagine someone who really hated one of them stuck them in a barrel encased in concrete and dropped it down into the bottom of the ocean. If Arthur was caught they'd all be screwed since he's the only one with the capability of getting the others out.

Yeah his concerns are definitely valid but you have to wonder if he is TOO cautious to enjoy life. He's an immortal and he's working a clerk job for essentially minimal wage by himself and was alone for years. Idk.

Considering how old they are and where they're from, it's likely all of the siblings have had multiple husbands/wives throughout their 1,000+ years. I can understand wanting to take it easy after wife for life #5 passed and you've lived to see your great, great grandchild grow old and die.
