I really don't like how Maya keeps blaming herself for not becoming important to Michiru.

Michiru cheated on you. Left you without saying a single word, twice. She came back to mooch of you with a kid. She is a deeply selfish woman. She should be working overtime for your love.

Right now, I hope that there will be more of a backstory to Maya and Michiru's relationship, because it seems to be quite bizarre right now.

Maya seems to mainly have some sort of remaining attachment from before the two broke up that she can't let go of, and is constantly blaming herself for anything that went wrong, or at least ignoring the incident and focussing mainly on her inner feelings surrounding it? She constantly thinks of Michiru as a child and even an animal at one point, which makes me think that she is ignoring Michiru's capacity for doing wrong.

Michiru on the other hand seems to have been thinking of Maya as a constant presence in her life she may always return to without issue, which is why she was upset when being reminded of the fact that Maya could just leave their arrangement if she wanted. But in turn she seems to accidentally punish Maya by just leaving on impulse....

I'd really like to know more about their dynamic from before!

This chapter and the last one make it explicitly clear that you can hurt someone that you love, so while I'm not excusing Michiru for bailing so quick, she is not a moocher. She pays for half the rent, she enables a relationship between her child and the child's past lover. If anything, outside the father who has passed, this situation is largely ideal for him.

My frustration with that behavior completely faded by the end—the story did a good job explaining why the characters acted the way they did. But I won’t lie, it was definitely frustrating at the beginning.

That makes me hopeful to keep reading! Of course, I also understand your frustration. It's a sign of a good story that it can make is feel the way it does
