I disagree that the prince has added any problems, or that things were going particularly well. Nicole still has pretty much zero interest or expectations from Keios, all the prince has done is speed up her decisions regarding freedom from the marriage she doesn't particularly care about.

This was forshadowed for a good 3-4 chapters now. The moment she read about the meritocracy and woman's working right situation about the other country, this was a matter of time. As far as setups for conflicts go, this was done pretty well. Only downside will be if she doesn't accept the offer which would be compeltely out of character at this point.
