So, I understand you probably wrote that as a joke, but it got me really curious about why Canadian milk is bagged. I've always heard it, mostly in the context of 'look how weird this foreign country does things', but never really looked into it.

It turns out, Canadian milk used to be delivered in glass bottles and cartons, but those containers used imperial measurements. After Canada adopted metric measurements, manufacturing standards had to be overhauled, and the plastic bag was used due to how easy it is to adjust the machinery for it. Also that it's cheaper.

i know the bag milk is a joke to rest of world, but i never even gave second thought about reason why either

I'm not Canadian, but when I was in elementary school, we had milk in plastic bags until I was in about the third grade. Opening them was always an adventure. Usually at least once a week someone would poke the straw in and the sumbitch would burst everywhere.

When I tell you how scared I got that somehow it was going to be UNpasturized milk was tastier or something... I should have had more faith though. (Never drink raw milk! Never ever ever ever!!! It's not worth it! I'm from a dairy area, trust me.)

As for the stuff about cartons.... you know I wonder about that. The milk i get comes in the old fashioned American Plastic Mega-Jug. And its true the fancy milk in glass bottles tastes good.... but it's also usually from a small dairy farm to begin with.

Yeah, I had the same concern when I first read the chapter. You should've seen all the thoughts racing through my head in the few minutes between pages, wondering how I would sell the concept of unpasteurized milk.

Good thing that's not what the chapter is about.

Thank goodness! Instead it was genuinely very interesting. Especially since I'd always read fiction with kids not liking their school milk, and sort of took it as it was told- milks less common in japan, so it's less liked. (Which does make sense). But it's genuinely very interesting to find out it might have more to do with the type of milk it is!

It makes me wonder if american school milk is produced differently. I love learning this kind of stuff- so I really appreciate how this manga gets into it.

Omg I had the exact same fear for a hot moment that this was going to be a pro-raw milk chapter 😂 Oishinbo backs natural foods hard but I guess even then pasteurizing milk is basic sense.
