Did anyone ever find out how much BS was actually spewed by Yamaoka during this little arc?

Wow, 5 parts? Anyway I rather have people eating them than the whales "suiciding" or getting confused by whatever man made sound underwater making them crazy or getting hit by ship prop. Just dont go crazy hunting them like they are as many as commercial chicken.

I'm curious what justification they'd have for the whaling aside form "but culture/tradition!!"
They often go on and on about the importance of protecting forests and seas so that clean high quality fish and clams and vegetables whatever can still be enjoyed for generations to come. If they don't discuss the matter of conservation or at least some kind of way for sustainable hunting with the whales it's just really hypocritical.
Literally, the ethics of it aside, if the whales are hunted to extinction then there won't be any more of it to eat in the future.

I still remember from the anime how Yamaoka says that insects die during the harvest of vegetables and fruits, so hunting whales is fine since something will die anyway.

Yeah, I don't understand it, either. You'd think Kariya would've been sympathetic given his stances on other matters of conservation, but it's just the opposite. Not only is he supporting the resumption of commercial whaling, but unrestrained commercial whaling.

It's also bizarre because even before the moratorium on whaling that Japan willingly undertook, very few Japanese people even wanted to eat whale. In fact, huge portions of it were spoiling because there was just no market for it. Now that Japan has resumed commercial whaling, we know that the industry wouldn't survive without government subsidies. We also don't know if they're sustainably hunting as they claimed when they resumed it in 2019...

The anime made some very wild claims. I think there was one about imported fruit causing cancer... I can't remember if I TL'd that chapter in the manga yet, but I try to make TL notes about the wildest claims...

I think Kariya's national pride was hurt by the whole topic, so it was a sort of lashing out. I think conservation is only important for him when it plays a part in making good products for cooking.

I remember that these controversial episodes were not shown again in streaming services afaik.

being a series from the 80s, i take everything with a grain of salt. we in much different times now, but even still its weird to see so heavily pro whaling, even shifting the blame on us

i dont like that jeff, clearly on the side of the animals, will probably be swayed
