Hard read because Kariya actually makes a lot of points I agree with here but then pulls out willful ignorance on the endangered status of whales. Nevertheless always fascinating to see how strongly he believes in things that don't necessarily have scientific basis. Like you can see the attitude that took Oishinbo into the 2014 fiasco lol

This chapter really pissed me off as I was reading/translating it. The way they tricked Jeff into eating whale meat is like, the most disrespectful thing Yamaoka has done before or since.
He's been disrespectful before, but in those cases, he's usually targeting stuffy customs or obnoxious folks who had it coming. This time, he took advantage of Jeff's innocence and trust.
Bad show, Yamaoka. This is not how you argue a point. Go sit in the corner.

Yeah, that was some bullshit. Even if everything else that he said was accurate, one should never, ever trick someone into eating something that they have a moral objection to eating. That's some Gordon Ramsay shit.

Yeesh and a half. Too late, fool! I have already drawn myself as the calm cynical gourmet who knows Actually whale populations are increasing, and YOU as the sputtering blonde american who doesn't even know eating a chicken is Exactly The Same Thing.

But f'real, its interesting reading this just since I do think theres complicates aspects to whaling. Esp for places where its a real matter of sustenance farming. I would definitely want to know more about the situation.

...but the tone of this reminds me of the anti-anti lumber videos we'd get shown in my rural Lumber Industry Heavy home area with messages like "ACTUALLY we're simply planting New Trees which is Exactly the Same, and aren't paper plates convenient?"
