Well three down, two to go... Kariya really decided to go full on with the racial slurs that even in the 80s were considered deeply offensive and unacceptable. I really was unsure about whether to leave it as is. In fact, I'm still not entirely comfortable with leaving them in there.

While the author did have nuanced views regarding being aware of classism and respecting other cultures (thus why certain dishes are done in certain ways), stories like this whale one, the one where they gave honey to a baby (???) and specially the Fukushima one where he straight up refused to change his mind even if it meant abandoning his work of over 2 decades cement that ultimately Kariya liked "feeling in the right" more than properly research what he's talking about.

I don't think you should feel uncomfortable. It is what it is, to change it would be softening the hirstory

I can commiserate with the discomfort of this arc, I'm getting flashbacks to when I translated the second volume of Kenkanryu for university.

Regarding the statement of enigmatic nation, Oishinbo up to now is truly a product of bubble Japan IMO. I wonder what tone the manga takes once the bubble burst.

i know its not funny, but i couldnt help but chuckle how blatantly evil the opposition is, slurs and everything. easist way to make your point right is paint opponent in worst light
