I feel there's disconnect from...not having maybe all the details..or they really expect Yamaoka to be that forgiving.

Because everytime they praise Kaibara infront of Yamaoka..or go " why dont the two of you make up " to his face....

I keep going back to that initial confrontation where HE TELLS HIS COWORKERS HIS DAD CAUSED HIS MOM TO DIE. So like....either theres context like " She didnt actually die to his doings of overworking her "...or its kind of fucked they keep doing that to him.

Edit: I am ofcourse aware alot of the characters who praise Kaibara wasnt privy to that discussion. I am more referring to characters who did (like Yuko and the coworkers like Tomii) and the ones who probably would be privy to some context we dont have like Toyama who apparsntly has always been close to the two.

I swear, I thought I'd responded to your message before... So, we are indeed missing context as readers that we will eventually get in a future volume. But, the relationship between Kaibara and his wife was not nearly so bad as Yamaoka perceived it. I would add more, but it will be covered in a later volume. Of course, Kurita, Tomii, and Tanimura (who were there when he blamed him for killing his mother) won't have much context either, but given their personalities (or at least Kurita's and Tanimura's), I think they probably feel like he's exaggerating and that if they would sit down and talk they could work things out. Toyama certainly has the full context, which is likely why he's the one that pushes hardest for reconciliation.

Super appreciate the answer. It's been in the back of my mind whenever someone goes " Kaibara is so cool and respected. He can make food into art " and I just kept thinking back to that scene. Now its gonna fell less jarring reading going forward knowing that theres some nuance we are missing.

Because if it legit was:" Yeah no, Kaibara did all that, no notes needed. I am still gonna try and humanise him "...thats...fucking WILD to do as a writer. Not good wild either.
