Yeah, all the recreation attempts I've seen use store-bought glass noodle strips, though I do think that's forgivable.

Kaibara may be difficult, but it's those times where he has no choice but to yield that make his character so enjoyable to compete with. In turn, I love watching Yamaoka face up against his father's undeniable experience and taste. I'm itching to see if they eventually return to the topic of Yamaoka's mother... It's still a little hard to see how she, as briefly as she's been described, fit into the dynamic.

...On one hand, it's definitely true smokings bad for you and lessens your sense of taste. However, I also believe if cigarettes suddenly vanished from this world, the gourmet cooking industry would be thrown into complete and total chaos.
