LOL, surprise charity donation. I was wondering what they were gonna do with the money. It's already obvious Yamaoka wasn't gonna actually get it.

Well yeah, that's always the gag isn't it? Shiro does something out of greed and of course it backfires on him.

As much as I love this manga for its cultural insight and recipe inspiration, the characters are such assholes most of the time 😬

Also "I couldn't bring myself to say it was on behalf of my wife" why??

I agree. Hardly a chapter goes by without somebody being a dick to somebody else for no good reason. For a country that prides politeness as much as the Japanese do, it's kind of wacky.

His whole strategy was to hide the fact that he'd made a pact with his wife not to eat delicious food until she got better. Rather than just telling the others that, he decided to act like an asshole to people who are, ostensibly his friends or associates. When my gf and I watched this episode of the anime together, she went on at length about how ridiculous Inamori's stance was.

Thats what I find baffling, is it seriously so bad to admit you are doing something sweet for your wife? Is it really worth nearly burning all those bridges? So weird 😭

I assume there’s some aspect of Japanese culture that isn’t translating for western audiences. I’m an American, my girlfriend is Australian. We sat in the same room here in Pittsburgh and had the same reaction to the anime. She watches a lot more anime and reads a lot more manga than I do, and she was as baffled as I was. So, it has to be something that just doesn’t pick up over here. Did he think he’d lose face somehow? Was it just stubborn pride? Overdeveloped need for privacy? I can’t say, but I can say, it made as little sense to us as it did to you.
