My thing is that if you're a real woman, or even just a real person in general with insecurities and worries and whatnot about your body, and you see a bunch of characters who have never and will never be depicted with gray hair, wrinkles, acne, stretch marks etc., and do not actually gain weight ever worrying about dieting and aging (what aging the difference between you and the 10 years younger you was nothing), and those worries are often played for laughs, then how the heck are you supposed to feel about that.
Personally, I deeply believe that it's a social artifact to keep people "in line" to varying degrees; it's different ways in different places, and also applies hugely to men (He-Man, Rambo, Reacher, EtC), making men just as body conscious.

But when there is a tool, somebody will use it.
If that "tool" is social shame, somebody will use it; religiously based shame works the same way, but it's the intent to control that I believe is the basis of the issue.

But that's just my ¥2/2¢
