Rip Currents are a thing and have killed beach goers. humans are not built for the ocean and countless voyages to sea being never heard from again even in the modern era. The sea can be beautiful as it is treacherous. It's a death trap as far as the eye can see honestly.

Rip currents aren't that big of a deal. Heck, in early elementary classes we are told how to swim out of them, and family always taught the kids how to swim out of them by going with the current instead of against it, it's scary unless you are told enough so you know 'I'm going into deeper water, be aware.' It's like the rule of shuffling your feet for stingrays, it's just something most people who live near water should know.
