You don't need to add a superfluous character for that. All you have to do is not address the romance aspect. The core gimmick of the manga is a visitor's guide to Okinawan culture. Lean into that and explore the other friendships within the group. There's plenty of other options without diluting the cast and distorting the character balance.

It's a "choice"... Digging into the background characters works for me. Most of the characters are paper-thin anyway, so meat on the bone of a couple of them would be a good thing, but let's be honest, no character in this story is much of anything. I don't think author-san is any good at writing anyone deep and meaningful. So I can't see them wanting to explore their existing cast.
