Or closer to Japan, their WW2 soldiers that got stuck outside their supply network and completely starved for weeks - the ones who survived would basically be fed nothing but rice water for a while. (Because Japan had such a history of starvation that it seemed to be common knowledge to not overfeed the starved.)
