But really, the dynamic of both of them going, "Phew, good thing they didn't notice!" and not realizing that they're 70% on the same page is very good.
Also I vaguely remember hearing about another "repaying a favor" story that ends better than the crane one. A fox wife is discovered and tried to do the whole, "now that you know my true identity I must leave 😢" thing and her human husband is like, "It's fine?! I love you, we even have kids, please come home."
