While I agree that MTL are by and large a mixed bag, and providing something better is a noble effort, it's also pretty lame to shit on a dude who at least bothered with translating and sharing a clearly abandoned manga. The translation was rough, but good enough to get the gist, and it's not like anyone else was bothering with it.

The translation was rough, but good enough to get the gist, and it's not like anyone else was bothering with it.

I have no qualms about criticizing somebody who literally just chucked the pages into an automatic AI translator (the kind who edits the pages and types out the text for you), since they did zero work and provided an awful translation. The thing wasn't even in proper English for crying out loud. At least some folks who use AI try to bother editing the text (I still think MTL sucks but at least this shows a modicum of care), but even that was too much in this case it seems. And they even had the gall to ask for donations for this complete lack of effort, which I'm guessing was the main objective of the uploads.

Not even mangadex allows this type of low effort translation, which is why the chapters got removed.

I could also give you a summary of every chapter and it'd be enough to "get the gist", doesn't mean it's the same as reading the words the author wrote and interpreting them as intended. There's a story trying to be told here, and AI slop translations cannot accurately represent it.

Go chuck chapters into AI translation sites if you want to "get the gist" all you want, I don't criticize people for doing that since it's for their own personal use, but publishing them for other people to see, causing said chapters to be picked up by other aggregators and giving thousands, maybe even millions of people just that one experience (because most people who read on aggregators never switch sites to look for better translations), is an insult to the author and the manga they wrote, and I will never not criticize that.

Either way, I'm just putting my money where my mouth is and translating this properly.

I wholeheartedly approve of "screw mtl" message, I've dropped reading many potentially good stories since I don't want to read that garbage. It's especially disheartening when you see new chapter of long forgotten manga release and it ts mtl.
On another note - thank you for picking up this manga, I really look forward to it, but please take your time with it and proceed at your own pace.

The problem is that garbage MTL that stays up and keeps getting worked on will often dissuade better translators from working on it.

I don't really want to be engaged in this conversation and nosebleed has already mentioned a bit of this above, but I just want to re-iterate that out that the other chapters were taken down because they were clearly generated with an automated tool, which is against MangaDex rules. They were approved by mistake by a newer mod who was not familiar with these sort of automated chapters. I was the one who noticed and took them down.

As mentioned in my post on the deleted chapter, the pages were clearly watermarked with the tool used:

This is a tool that anyone can use that just requires uploading a page and downloading the result before uploading to MangaDex as is. At some point MangaDex has decided that this sort of thing is not in the spirit of scanlation and should not be encouraged.

Imo, its one thing to do MTL just because you genuinely think a series deserves a translation, but your own TL skills aren't up to snuff.

The vast majority, however, are almost always some kind of e-begging outfit that can barely string together a coherent sentence in either the language they're translating from or the one they're translating to.

I think it's been hinted that he has some sort of issue that leads him to believe that he misinterprets other people or can't "read the room", seemingly particularly with regard to women (which would be why every interaction he has with Sonoda has him thinking about how it could be seen as harassment or creepy) and that creates a cycle of him sucking at socializing and thus avoiding it, but never improving because he gets no practice.

But also a lot of this is just down to Japanese social expectations where people are supposed to be humble and deferential to an insane degree, basically constantly putting themselves down and acting like they are stupid and useless and only survive by the grace and patience of others. He has basically been trained by society to believe that he is worthless and inferior to everyone else around him, and can't actually be hitting it off with Noda because he's actually a decent person who she might like. There has to be some other reason that she puts up with him in spite of his laundry list of flaws and constant threat of saying/doing the wrong thing.

Huh, I had no idea such tools exist already. I thought full MTL requires manually feeding the text into OCR that might not even automatically translate for you, depending on the service/application. After getting translated text, you would need to typeset similarly to traditional scanlantions, and all that. Maybe you'd even need to clean raw pages if you didn't find textless ones. What you said really opens the door to minimal effort like I couldn't even imagine.
