Is it a case of me missing all the hints, or are the hints dropped elsewhere?

I think in this case, it's just that the hints were pretty subtle. I didn't really think of this until he pointed it out. It's definitely never directly addressed, but indirectly implied with the moniker and other things throughout the story so far.

I still don’t get why people can’t recognise his face. Is it because he’s a reader or is it because of the forth wall?

I think in this case the imp edited his face for whatever reason
