Oh sh*t, it's Yanauchi!

Taiyodo is based on Sekaido. It's a multi-storey megastore for art supplies and stationery located in Shinjuku.

Did you guys watch Shogun? Tadanobu Asano (actor for Yabushige) has an Instagram where he uploaded all of his art.

God, I felt that page where Ootsuki looks at the other dude drawing so badly.
Getting over the quality of your drawings when you're starting and comparing yourself to others is indeed one of the biggest if not the biggest hurdle when learning how to draw. At least it is for me.
As someone who wants to learn how to draw and sporadically tries but yet cannot truly take the first step this entire chapter spoke to me really deeply.

Eheheeh I noticed that he forgor to buy the paper right away and was giggling about it until they had to hit me with Yanauchi-san! Ugh!! That man, he's everything!
I will absolutely not be surprised if his main job at Teiai doesn't even require any violence, his words just reach straight into your heart 🥺🥺

I like to draw too and the quality is lower than that of a kindergartner because the having fun part is always prioritized over everything else - and that's fine too. My audience is mainly friends and family, as long as they like it the supplies haven't been for nothing.
Gotta stay away from that store if I ever end up in Japan tho or I'll be deported pretty soon for running out of money...

japanese art stores really are a delight. i went to a bunch with my mom on our recent trip cause she was looking for a very particular type of pen.

for a while i was in a strange relationship with someone who was a very good artist, and she taught me a lot and we spent a lot of time drawing and painting together. i improved a lot and had a lot of fun, i even made a few substantial comics. unfortunately we had a really ugly falling out after a couple years and since then i haven't drawn a single thing. the association is just too painful. someday though i'd like to rediscover the joy of drawing for the fun of it.

Yeah, timed your Japan trip with my break so you wouldn't miss much. Hah, just kidding, happy coincidence and I'm glad it worked out this way.

Sorry about the art thing. I played a guitar song for my mom when I was younger and she just walked away in the middle of it. Never touched it again

It's tough that the most beautiful things we can do in life are often also the most fragile :(
It's okay. My mom never taught me anything in this life directly - I learned everything the hard way through anti-learning and doing of the opposite of her when it comes to how you're supposed to treat people. It's not a sad thing for me, it really do be that way. ;)
