Foreman and Isawa are Japanese history buffs, as established in chp.10. The Bakumatsu is the final era of old Japan with the shogunates before they returned power to Emperor Meiji and Japan began to modernize. It was spearheaded by the bloodless surrender of Edo Castle, in a meeting between Saigō Takamori and Katsu Kaishū.
