They tried some tricksy shit and my god does my head hurt trying to untangle it all.

This sort of feels like half way to being good. It has a lot of potential and I can mostly see what the author was going for, but the execution just doesn't live up to that at all. The reader has to reach the actual meaning and "solution" on their own in a way that doesn't really feel satisfying, if they even reach it at all. It sort of feels like eating a hollow cake.
