I must have missed that. Though why is that a problem? I guess if an idol smokes it could potentially ruin their singing voice?
idol culture is crazy, they can't do anything that deviates from the perfect image their fans have of them, they can't smoke, be in a relationship and so on

This latest chapter is the one that makes me want to see this animated. Because I’ve got no clue what they were talking about regarding the singing. So Yoil wants to be a cool girl idol like Rua, but decided to try and not do that during the evaluation because of their sort of beef. I wonder if she liked being called cool by that guy in her evaluation. He essentially said, that regardless of singing like a man or a woman, the performance was still cool.
That’s like cutting to the core of what Yoil wanted in the first place.

I read this for fun at first, but now I kinda fw it.

The only thing I dont like though,is the fact it will turn into a harem very soon.

If only Han Yoil was wearing a crop top or something, you know, so we could better see the breathing thing the guy was giving feedback to her for. And only for that reason 🙄

I was too into Oshi no Ko. I thought Lee Ruha was about to get offed at the end of chapter 43 lol.
I really liked her confession to our MC.
But man, WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS!

I must say, the writing is way too well-written. The author is really good at avoiding common pitfalls in the genderbend genre. You'd think with a premise like this the writing's would be lousy and fall into tropey fan-service harem or power fantasy but nope! The story is very grounded (short of the genderbend itself) and even wrote the antagonistic (bitchA) Suryeon as a semi understandable character, I can see why she would reasonably crash out like that yeah.

Stuff like managing to make it so that the genderbend aspect/the fact that the MC is a guy actually matter and plays a major factor in the story. Look at the dozen of GB femMC power fantasy isekais where its only mentioned in the first 6 chapters or so before being forgotten in favour of the usual power fantasy adventuring shtick. just cause hack isekai writers just wanted their MC to be pretty to look at while still being relatable to (the majority) male readers.

I think a main part of this is because the whole manwha revolves around idols, an industry that is inextricably linked to feminity which allows for plenty of situations where the genderbend aspect of the MC comes in for great story beats.

There is also the common pitfall of just making the MC be essentially a tomboyish insecure beautiful girl, which the author also managed to avoid. Mainly by writing it be a Ranma-style trigger and also have side effects. The entirety of the (amazing) Lee Ruha arc is really good example of how the author avoided this.

Oh and don't even get me started with Lee Ruha, such a believably flawed character and well made character. I love her so fucking much.

For those who engage with genderswap stories for representation or self insert/fantasy: I am sure you will have rose colored interpretations, but I don't think the story this far in is really like that(cough no eggs)..
As someone who sits in the 4chan /d/ tsf-enjoyer side of the great GB divide and is well versed in this space. I can safely say that this thing can be enjoyed by essentially anyone due to how simply compelling and well-written the story is. I certainly enjoyed it.

I can see the wish-fullfillment eggs tumblr side of the genre enjoying this (despite my many grievances against them). I can see someone interested in idols enjoying this and I can see the average joe schmoe manwha reader enjoying this. Its that good.

Or maybe its cuz I have been so very fucking often dissapointed by tsf works i'm caught off-guard that an actually good one emerged. I have a really low expectation of GB in manga/manwha/manwhua short of doujins and this punches well above my low standards

I've been binging Gender Bender stories the past 2 months since discovering "Han Yoil" and "Until I become Me", and I gotta say, the genre has a surprising lack of good series. I'd chalk it up to most authors using the gender bend part of the story as cheap comedy or as an excuse to fantasize about their best friend becoming their GF.

Han Yoil is just a very solid story overall; it has a great sense of build-up and payoff (like when Sanghyun uses Iruha's lessons to escape the guy chasing him), and on top of that, it uses the gender bend aspect of the story interestingly, utilizing it as a proxy to discuss beauty standards and sense of self (all in a relatively respectful manner).

I hope the quality of the story stays strong because the gender bender genre desperately needs better options.

Stories that are able to implement GB as a narrative device well is very few and far between unfortunately. And yeah I concur its mostly just for comedy (the amount of one off episodes where someone is GB-ed played as a cheap joke in shounens infruirates me. Considering all the lost potential... but alas its not their main focus) or as a fetish tag whether it be for degradation or wish fullfillment. (To each, their own)

I will look into your recommendation you mentioned though thanks for that, I wrote it off beforehand. But will give it a try. The only other GB work that implements this narrative device well enough off the top of my head is "I Hope You're Happy Lemon" a decent bodyswap (close enough to GB) that is similarly grounded but instead focuses more on romance and how seeing things from another perspective (literally) affect your understandings of things. (Its a romance though with all the baggage that come with it... becoming 'Will they wont they!?' romcom in the latter end. but the early parts are solidly good.)

Theres also JM but you already know thats peak, comedy or not.

I sincerely dont wish that the Lee Ruha arc would be the peak of the story though in terms of quality, I hope that this story can grow and peak even more with lots of potential. I trust the author make compelling story beats for now. He knows to take progression slow, measured and grounded. Making sure each step of progresssion is thoroughly explored. His past works is a drama thriller instead of cheap stuff so I rest easy a bit that the manwha is in good hands

So what exactly is the perfume doing to him? And what did they mean the bath bomb only changes the external things? Like are the organs still male? Or is that some odd translation from Korean to English.
Also, that lady is definitely new right? Is this the relative that Kim mentioned a while back?

i'm also a bit confused, how come the bath change just the external appearance? to archive it there's a muscle and vocal chords change, but i guess the author inteded to say the perfume mimics more a female body? honestly, the "kyaa" is not inherent to woman, it's a social thing. i like how mc is genuine in the relations he forms, and not a greasy weirdo like most of male mc in shonen, please don't form a harem, that doesn't even make sense in the scope of this story
