Really sad that harem is off the table

I've also heard "cracking" being used as the weakening of one's resolve not to do something, which could apply here as well - but I guess we're actually on the same page in this case.

They're pushing him too hard. At this rate, he's likely to just snap and run off back to wherever on his own, plan or no plan, and they'll all be shit out of luck.

This first started as your stereotypical female rivalry but morphed into trying to force it out of him and that is exactly what is driving his brain to "I want to leave this village", and whatever everything else is going through it. At least the story has actually stayed on track to some extent. I'm guessing this needs at least another 10 to 15 chapters to get him to say anything significantly new, at least from the girls' POV.

I can't tell if the author is stalling to get significant ideas (seen it many times before) or if it's just high grade harem torture.

Harem is the only ending that isn't pitiful on the girls, as they have no other male choice, unless the author wants to bring down a bunch of males.
And no one is really against the idea even except the male.
