Yeah it seems a little ridiculous to have an ex-partner plot thrown in at this point.

I don't see an issue with an ex-gf plot. As said in the previous comments - the relationship is too stable at this point to be threatened by an ex. So I'm sure it will be handled just as this author does in this manga. That is to say, I'm not worried, I'm sure it will not be a cliche drama, but another way to add depth to our characters and their relationship.
