The past couple of chapters has Momji being pretty aggressive l. But I don't remember it being canon that she has a crush on Mahiro.

She has gotten much more aggressive the last couple of chapters and it's now definite canon she has a crush on Mahiro. Before that it was a lot more subtle and readers weren't certain if the hints were real or wishful thinking on our part.

And to be fair, the anime probably wouldn't have done that without asking Nekotofu if it was okay to do so first. The anime didn't mess with canon much beyond changing the onsen trip to be with all of Mahiro's friends instead of just Mihari, Momiji, Kaede & him.

I feel completely safe in saying he'll freak out badly and panic, thinking it's a crime for him to have a middle school girl in love with him since he's really a 20-something guy. Of course it's not a crime and it happens all the time, but this is Mahiro we're talking about. Remember how stupid he was about going to the restroom together with the other girls early on?

I mean, momiji has gotten openly jealous of others getting close with mahiro since very early in their friendship, going so far as to intervene on some occasions when Asahi got all huggy. By all appearances, it started as just a kid wanting to monopolize their friend's attention, like kids do.
The question at this point is whether momiji fully understands the implications of her actions, or is still acting out of childish possessiveness. Both are sugar in my veins, but the former would certainly be interesting for the future..
