"Trap" is definitely more of a loaded term than alternatives like "femboy", disregarding any moral grandstanding. Or it feels like a very slangy term.

I personally read one article about how declaring words slurs is what makes them slurs – most of the contexts I've seen the word "trap" in haven't been especially malicious (though still usually "othering"). There are many words which have less than kosher origins or literal meanings, but we still use them today because, well, they've changed over time.
