I don't get why Momotaro was made into a weird, scary, monster that's a blob of indistinct flesh below the hips.

Heh, that cynical final line was great, and I like the discussion on the fascinating topic of how a lot of Japanese tales of demons were actually euphemisms for war and subjugation of other tribes.
