Frogs and toads go ケロ kero, but if you're emphasizing how loud it is it can get 'promoted' to ゲロ gero - which is probably why Yatabe thought it was cute. But I think unless it's specifically related to frog/toads making loud sounds most people are going to associate gero with puke so you get this reaction from Subeyama.
