Not seeing the lower quality here varpie. seems to be exactly on par with comicdom or floriejane or whatever they call themselves to scam people out of money.
Image quality is the same, but they're adding their ugly watermark on many pages, and I think the redraw quality isn't as good (the others are more conservative, so sometimes there is japanese text peaking behind, but Manhwafreak/Freakcomic loses details on their redraw).
The main issue is translation though. Lots of very generic things that don't sound right, and other issues such as:
  • page 4: "that's pretty good actually" what is good? Is it an excuse? An explanation? A joke?
  • page 8: "these spices help to enhance the appetite" surely they mean enhance the taste, making people more hungry when eating doesn't sound right
  • page 15: "it's an herb" so Basil goes "this is..." for the 2 other ones, but for this one she goes "it's" for no reason, and says "an herb" when she points at 2 different herbs...
  • page 16: "what else do you need?" "what kind of..." "what kind...?", the "what kind" response doesn't make sense with the question, it is never finished and repeated, probably a TL error
  • page 16 (again): Basil should say "Yes!" and the thought bubble should say "However", not the other way around
  • page 18: "you also have a memory of letting lose" probably means a history, or it just doesn't make sense...
  • page 19: this page is a mess. First maid speech bubble is duplicated, the first thought bubble doesn't make sense, the maid seems to call the master "dear!" (or maybe it should have been "oh, dear!"?)...
  • page 20: the maid doubles down on the "dear"... probably should be something more respectful instead, this is Gil, not Reid she's talking to.
  • page 20 (again): the text about turmeric doesn't make sense. Yes, turmeric is called turmeric in English. Maybe if she was saying the English word in the raw, they could have added a TL note or a different font or something.
  • page 21: "the difficulty of the cuisine called curry" probably means the dish instead of the cuisine

And overall, they keep the Japanese grammar more often than they should, with sentences that would be more idiomatic if they were read backwards in English.

Coming from a group that is known for censoring content without telling anyone, I find the accusations of being dishonest quite funny.

Page 8: actually the spices are meant to enhance the appetite. thats a unique thing about curry spices.

Page 15: basil pointing out that the "spices" are herbs isn't weird cause this world has no concept of spices.

Page 18: Memory is the correct context here but phrasing for it i admit could be better.

Page 19: fair enough.

Page 21: curry is a type of cuisine though. there is not single dish called curry cause it has many different and unique variations so cuisine is correct here. specifically this definition of it: food cooked in a certain way.

As for the watermark... eh? so what? it doesn't block out any important images or text, and its better than seeing the money begging scam every single chapter.

Additionally one could argue comicdom started the drama when they scammed thousands of dollars out of people to pump out over 700 or so manga chapters and then DIDNT PAY THE TRANSLATORS. those translators went on to form other groups, some of which are in manwhafreak. As for sniping, i would call this liberating a series from someone holding chapters hostage behind a scam, rather than translating regularly. they only let such massive gaps between raw and current build up to hype up the need topay them quickly, payments they dont disclose publicly and so multiple people will donate well above the advertised 30 dollars they claim they need, allowing them to easily rake in hundreds if not at least a thousand in payments. then they spam those that donate asking for additional money for services they dont intend to fulfill. thats their entire gimmick, their modus operandi. At least Manwhafreak is upfront about their prices and will tell you when something has already been paid for.

The smell of some things increases appetite, it gives you more of a craving, so it feels like it tastes better when you eat it. The smells of tasty things cooking can even make other blander foods more satisfying, or makes people more agreeable, like how real estate agents will throw rolls of cookie dough into the ovens of houses they show, so the smell of baking cookies will make people feel more at home.

it's nice to see a realistic reaction to a new food based on cultural differences
