That's how it's done on many official manga reader sites.
At least, an option would be nice.
An exception would be manga that have really ugly vol 1 that doesn't represent the manga well and doesn't spoil much.
If the user had read up until that volume, the new cover should be shown.

Then it changes covers based on your last unread volume. If you read the entire series it shows the latest volume cover. This is purely aesthetic, I know.

In the past this has been suggested, but the option that was considered it was simply the first or last volume cover, not based on reading progression...

Yeah reading new manga and get spoiled by the cover for valume 13 doesn't sound fun, it will be great if they can do that
Yep, case in point for a new manga: Mikoto-chan wa Kirawaretakunai!

You can see the scar on the right side of the MC face in the volume 3 cover, while the other covers don't show this.

Add a toggle: on, it displays the last uploaded cover (or some other metric for "last"); off, it displays the first uploaded cover (or some other metric for "first").

That's precisely why the mainsite allows to set a main cover other than the most recent (that is, highest volume number) one already, so if you notice spoiler covers (the uploader might not be familiar with the series), you can probably report them...

Alternatively, just keep it at first volume cover if it's too much effort for the devs.

I like to see when the volume covers change; it makes me reconsider reading a manga that I had dropped or at least enjoy the new cover and art style.
I don't think about the cover or the synopsis before reading anything, so there's no reason I'm gonna get spoiled... Unless the author really wants to spoil me. :pout:
