The deal about the previous hero, Rei, was never properly explained. What we know is that she lost most of its powers and the current heroes were summoned as a feed for her.
The Witch, Ordina, was a insider employed by the Empire to guide the Rei, but she apparently had her own agendas which lead to current mess, also not properly explained.

It didn't kill him, it kept him conscious even though he was already dead. That first slash on his back killed him

I have to say the fight scenes are.... almost not understandable. Like each frame looks good, but taken as a whole its just a mess. Everyone having similar styles, and clothing, and hair means its just a mess of people and swoosh lines. Just kinda sad.
