I don't think he's dense at all I think he's been in love all along and is chasing away any guys that go after her, similar to what she does, it's just always from her pov so it's not shown

I don't think MC is dense. He probably loves her and knows she likes/loves him a whole lot.

The thing is that she saves his life (adopted him after he was abandoned as a kid), so there's a big chance he just thinks a """"plebeian nobody"""" like him couldn't possibly deserve to act on his feeling to his noble lady princess. He has clearly shown his resolve to serve him for the rest of his life like that.
