Well, I guess it depends whether these expenditures remain deducted when he reloads a save or not. But since they're not in-game purchases, logically his money should be restored... in which case it is idiotic to save AFTER paying.
But if the purchases are retroactive even for this... then I guess the choice makes a bit more sense.
