This was one of my favourite isekai, but after the time skip, this hasn't been that much fun anymore. Maybe one big reason is that I can't see anymore the point in any of this. Before the time skip, Harold was just pretty desperate all the time and new stuff kept happening, but not so anymore. Now he seems perfectly content with working for the last boss, and he's not doing much and the funny interactions with other interesting characters are few and far between.

Worst of all, it seems like Harold sees absolutely no value in his own life and happiness. It's pretty difficult to root for such a main character. He's working to save the world, but by the looks of it he doesn't care if he's alive when/if the world is saved. What's the point in that when he's not even defending anyone, nor does he owe anything to this new world? Now he doesn't care if Erica is married to this stupid prince? The king himself allows Justus to do whatever Justus wants to do (destroy the world), which means the royal house is rotten. Harold is okay with Erica ending up in that rotten royal house as a bride?

I've said this before in another series where someone had more or less this same comment, but it's fairly simple: most readers rate a series early on in the story, when they're high on that new series feel and then never change it to reflect their feelings when they come down off that high (probably because they forgot about having rated it in the first place), so the rating remains high regardless of any perceived dip in quality.

The First Berserker: Khazan actually does this: when you die against a boss, you still gain a chunk of EXP (with the amount being based on how much damage you dealt to the boss), encouraging you try and try again. It can be genuinely disheartening in a challenging game to constantly lose over and over as you try to learn, while also potentially losing your progress.

Most people I've seen who've played Khazan seemed to have loved that feature and wished it was in other Souls-likes to take a bit of the sting out of death while learning a boss.

Yep, I agree with everyone here, this was one of the best until the decline began. Short chapters, barely any progression, and just overall the wealth of character interactions just went down. I still HATE the fact that he chose to approach saving the lives of those army mates like he did, which started the descent into the timeskip.

It was neat that he has actually interacted with two from the hero’s party but it’s been kind of lagging everywhere else.

One major issue everyone here is forgetting is that Harold wants to avoid disturbing the flow of the original game. He is worried about the butterfly effect throwing everything off and destroying the world. He considers his current isolation fair game in exchange, but it also means his will to live is fading the more he persists in Justus' service. What is going on now is the slow weaving of bonds to give our boy Harold a chance. Leafa discovering his limited lifespan, meeting Erica again, it's all for that.

He's trying to survive and hasnt given up on life. The issue is he's trying to keep the plot as close to the original as possible. And in the original Harold is by himself. He doesn't realize the impact he's having on those around him only his end goal of surviving and having the heroes save the world. He has two swords and the one he has currently isnt the life stealing. The LN slows down around here as Harold tries to get the heroes group leveled up while staying under Justus's radar.
