It's really easy to kill someone with a stick. Also, if you attack someone without warning, you honestly kinda forfeit all rights to being alive at that point. A lot of fighting is training your instincts so if you take a swing at someone "as a joke" you don't get to complain when they react by beating the hell out of you.
