The first thing that came to mind for me was Negima. Later in the run of the manga Negi learned how to apply the pactio system to himself to essentially double-up on his mana capacity and physical enhancement.

Wait, applying the Pactio to himself? That's wrong. I read Negima multiple times (even met Akamatsu-sensei in his offices and got his signature) and I don't remember anything of that. He did not apply the Pactio to himself, but he did a temporary reverse Pactio with Mars' third princess, Theodora, having her as the magister, and consequently him getting the Pactio card and effects, as one of multiple trump cards to use against Rakan.

I think it was something something, gaining achievements to show-off how great and powerful tamers can be. In the middle of doing that, MC stumbled on this whole evil gods thing, and now he's committed to finish it.

HEAVILY agreed. I really thought it was wonky, however overtime the use of the art style in combat etc is so well done. It really has it's own feel to it, even with the set up being pretty routine in nature.
