Not defending the captain but it kind of normal thing to do given the country this manga based from.
Never read the work where "revenge confession" works tho.

"Revenge confession" ... I've never heard of such a term before. I feel like such a thing would make more sense if they tried confessing to a new girl after they change themselves a little like you said, more to spite his former crush than out of genuine feelings for the new girl, but it just doesn't sound good in both cases.
