This is a really interesting exploration of his inner turmoil. Because, like... there IS a path forward here. They both know the darkest things about each other, and yet they both are still pulled together. Just... pursue this honestly. Go at this honestly. Reveal your pain, ask about hers, try and figure out where to go from there.
That he has one of his shadow selves telling him this and he shouts that down too is a fascinating portrayal of indecision; it's not that he can't find the way forward, it's that he is even unsure if he can take it.
He's a really interesting character for this sort of thing, because he's sympathetic but also self-centered and self-involved in a way that causes him to implode. I'm sure people call that some sort of narcissism, but I don't like that diagnosis cause everyone's pathologizing goddamn everything these days and I didn't fuckin' go to school for this shit to watch autistic kids decide that they're the only ones who like to solve fuckin' puzzles.
Instead, this reads as him internalizing narratives without understanding them, never confronting that, and developing a fear of himself that stops him from actually trying to learn about anyone else. Shit dude, he's been at that company for eight years, yet his interactions and relationships there mean nothing. He barely cares about his work, even though he's been at it for eight years. It's not active disinterest, we see him act as a decent guy with empathy for others. He's just wallowing in shame and fear all the time so self-criticism does nothing, hence why he stole and masturbated to pads. Since he's wallowing in shame and fear all the time he also doesn't have time to have interests in anything other than stuff that either feeds or allows him to ignore those things; porn to feed his shame, the unreality of anime to hide from anything that reminds him of the real world and thus shelter him from his constant negative thoughts.
Honestly, go 4 it, they've got chemistry, she clearly hates her husband, she's nuts but functions in society, he's nuts but functions in society, they both have deeply poisoned self-images... they're perfect for each other and all their cards are on the table.
